I really miss the constant action around here…and the podcasts. Have seen that a few of ya"ll have been trying to get some action going, but was not really in a position to participate so I have been hanging back and checking in periodically.
Here is a pic of one of the flies I have been tying up in anticipation of the upcoming fishing season, size 18 red quill. I have been working on filling a small box with dries/emergers/cripples that strike my fancy and this one really does it for me for some reason. Can take and post pics of others if anyone cares to see, really hope that this place doesn't die completely.

Nice tie, Matt. I've been trying all kinds of new stuff this winter — Polish woven nymphs, streamers, bass bugs, clousers, classic wet flys, etc… Going to start on some drys, emergers and spinners next.
I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Rich Kovars at a local fly tying seminar. Rich showed us how to tie a bunch of local favorites for the rivers here in New England.
(Rich, if you checking in, you should post of the list of flys that you tied.)
Glad to see your post Matt and effort to keep the board alive.

Yup–I really enjoyed that time with Rich his tying skills.
It was real good to meet you and your son, as well, Dean.
We should do some fishing.

Yes, John, it was good to meet you as well and we do need to plan a day trip together. I am very interested in exploring some of the Southern NH steams and rivers.
I just discovered your blog — very nice. Looking at some of the flys you tied this winter makes me want to tie more. It is so addicting ;-).

I'm really enjoying my new hobby. Should have started tying years ago, but life has slowed down some so its a good time.
Its just starting to come together…handling material and thread control and all. There is so much to learn.
How'd ya like that cool dry fly hackle wrapping technique that Rich showed us?
Pretty cool.

I have yet to try it the dry fly hackle wrapping technique.
For everyone else, Rich showed us this technique to get your dry hackle to stand straright out, perpendicular to the hook shaft. To accomplish this, wrap some very fine and thin dubbing in front of where the dry hackle will be wrapped. When wrapping in the dry hackle, the fine dubbing pushes the hackle fibers straight out, becoming a support base for the fibers.
I did tie some Gartside Soft Hackle Streamers, Guides Quick Caddis, Partridge and Orange (substitued some hen for the partridge). The GSHS and P&O are shown in this pic for T.F.M, along with a bass bug and black stone nymph.

Need to get in the right mood to tie drys. Maybe once I see more of them flying around I'll start

sounds like a great time there guys, too bad the MW is so far from the NE…
I have seen several patterns where there is a small amount of dubbing placed to the fore of the hackle/rear of the head as you mentioned, and I can definitely see the advantage to this now that you mention about it helping to hold the hackle in a more vertical plane. I may have to try this as having hackle protruding toward the eye is a pain, especially in the bitty ones.
Dean, those are some bassy looking flies!

Matt,
I'm planning on doing much more bass fly fishing this year. We have many 4+ pound bass in our local ponds. The poppers are fun to tie but I'm not looking forward to loosing those in the weeds. It will help me hone my casting accuracy ;-).
Streamer fishing is new to me, I've dead drifted some on streams without much luck, but also want learn how to successfully swing these in the local streams.
Thanks!
Dean
