Last year I had a friend take me to his favorite small stream when I was just getting into fly fishing. He and another guy he brought caught a bunch, I dont remember how many. I hooked two, and scared a shit load more. I was thinking to myself their fish counts were a little on the high side because they each caught a lot. I brought a 6/7 weight (and wore crappy Walmart waders and was miserable the whole time. both things I have repented of to the gods of the river may they live forever) but I don't think that is all that was wrong.
I have since gotten some new equipment from my father (Something of the act of a repentant deadbeat, I hadn't seen him in years but it turns out he became a fishing guide in CA and worked under Jay Fair. Go figure.) I've had about 40 fishing days since November, and countless hours of cruising the internet fishing forums, listening to all of the podcasts, and LITERALLY reading everything my library has on fly fishing. I guess you could put a number on it, 40 hours a week times 4 weeks a month times 9 = 1440 approximate hours at work doing all of the above distractions, plus a lot because my wife complains about it all the time. I have the kind of job where you are more or less there just in case something goes horribly wrong.
Yesterday we went back and fished from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Same three people, total fish released for all of us was 46. I caught 24 of them. 23.5 if I follow the rules my friend made after I told him how one teeny tiny fish I set the hook on went flying out of the river, off my hook, and into the bushes. I went to rescue him, I looked and looked for several minutes but I didn't see the poor bastard 3 inch fish until it was in the middle of my footprint. It was still moving so I put it in a calm spot in the weeds and hoped it was just in shock.
When I told my friend how many I caught he mentioned how long of a walk I could have to get home. All 107 miles of it.
Then I went and watched Inception in the Imax, the coolest movie I have ever seen. What an awesome day.
